Next OPEN DAY – Sat 18 May 2024 10am – 2pm

The May Open Day falls on the last day of the National Heritage Festival and offers attendees to learn more about a notable local businessman from the 1900’s – Nicholas Cain.

Nicholas Cain spent a number of years in the Hastings District where he was engaged in the timber industry initially as a timber merchant operating sawmills at Wauchope, Haytown and Newtown. Later Nicholas Cain ventured into shipping, particularly timber cargo, establishing the N. Cain Coastal Cooperative Steamship Company.

Throughout the day, guests will also have the chance to participate in guided tours of the historic Wauchope Station Master’s Residence, thanks to the members of the Wauchope and District Historical Society, gaining insight into its architectural significance and historical significance.

Originally home of the first police station and courthouse in Wauchope, the building became the Station Masters residence with the coming of the rail. Currently there are renovation plans in place to prepare for a new future as a place for the community to come together.

Come along for a walk-through, learn more about the project and find out how you can get involved and support this fabulous local initiative!
